Goodbye MindTouch

First of all, this was an incredibly difficult decision to make. I thought of a hundred reasons to stay, most of all the talented people - but in the end I believed it best to chart a new course (more on this below). I was honored to be hired by Steve and Aaron as eVP of Sales during a significant transition period for MindTouch. It was a time of tremendous growth and an exciting time to be part of MindTouch. Before I joined MindTouch, they ...

Why BleacherReport.com is Trouncing ESPN.com by using Social Business Principles

How can a small start-up compete with a much larger sports media powerhouse?  Is it the look and feel of the sites? The user experience?  The quality of the articles?    Not from my perspective.  In fact, on the surface the sites look similar.  Yet the self proclaimed open source sports network BleacherReport.com is clearly growing faster than their much better known competitor.   As you can see, ...

Game Changing Customer Support Communities (Presentation)

The following was the Presentation I gave at the Gilbane Conference in Boston   Self-Service support communities are beginning to replace the help desk for internal and external customer support.    In fact, these communities are simultaneously reducing costs (less support calls) and increasing revenue (SEO lead generation).   Follow along as I explore the history of documentation through its evolution to today’s game ...

Delivering Happiness Through Social Documentation

User Manuals Are Dead So why are they still being produced?  What value are they providing your customers?  User manuals today are the marketing equivalent of mailing out company brochures.  Utterly useless.  Static HTML and PDF based user manuals aren’t much better.  They haven’t evolved or kept pace with even the most rudimentary corporate websites.  Admit it.  They aren’t seen as strategic and your budget ...

Adobe and Hewlett Packard add Contextual Product Ads in Documentation Search

A new and important trend is emerging amongst the best of the documentation and eLearning sites.  Both Adobe and HP are delivering in product contextual ads based on user search queries.  While Google has been doing this for some time, they don’t control corporate ads on corporate search sites.  It’s important because technical documentation has always been seen as a necessary cost of doing business.  With contextual product ...

Google Can’t Save Your Local Newspaper – But This Business Model Can

Newspapers are Dead.  Ok, not quite dead but on life support.  According to Silicon Alley Insider so far this year: 105 newspapers have been shuttered. 10,000 newspaper jobs have been lost. Print ad sales fell 30% in Q1 '09. 23 of the top 25 newspapers reported circulation declines between 7% and 20%   Therefore when I read Can Google Save Your Local Newspaper by Robert Cringely at CIO Magazine, I was surprised by his ...

SharePoint 2010: Will it Improve Productivity in the Enterprise?

Today I watched the SharePoint 2010 demo and was pleasantly surprised by the functionality and potential to help increase productivity within the corporation.  The SharePoint team seems to be messaging similarly to Aaron Fulkerson and his views on Collaborative Networks, rapid application development, and data connectivity.  There are some very good new features and updates to SharePoint that I’ll cover below.  The Good ...

Sharepoint, Confluence, MindTouch who is best?

Chris Woodill who writes a Diary of an IT Innovator created a comparison matrix that I found enlightening. Since he’s personally implemented both technologies it was interesting to see the differences between the two technologies side by side. Personally and in my experience, at its core Sharepoint is more of a document management system with bolt on applications that make the entire system difficult to use and not seamless. Confluence is very good ...
